Finding a power-packed, meaning-filled podcast is such a treat. Finding a rockstar SERIES of podcasts where every episode out does the last AND where both the interviewee as well as the host pour lavish amounts of wisdom into every sentence? That is an absolute treasuuuuuuure.
Lately, I’ve been BLOWN away by the caliber and quality of IMPACT THEORY – a podcast created by the CEO and founder of Quest Nutrition, Tom Bilyeu. Not only is this guy dynamically committed to the personal growth and development of his entire company, but he is putting in incredible amounts of energy to cull world-class interviewees from around the globe and making that information available to anyone hungry enough to chew on some personal leadership development MEAT! I’ve quickly become a raving fan.
On my way to Ohio to visit my sister, my mom and I were desperate for some solid listening material. Thanks to Success Magazine’s introduction of Tom and a little bit of podcast archive digging, we ran across an episode interviewing the incredible Lisa Nichols. I cannot even put into words the power in this woman’s story. L I F E C H A N G I N G … to put it lightly. The amount of wisdom she shares around our convenience and conviction not living on the same block, the beauty of recognizing your imperfections and using them to master your contribution to the world, and the amount of life change that HAS to begin in our minds and hearts before anything goes anywhere in absolutely incomparable.
Amidst all she shared was a powerful development exercise – and one I knew I had to tackle ASAP. I modified it just a bit to make it the most beneficial for myself and my clients, walking through each life category and getting super specific. Stoked to share it with you here on the blog…
|| CREATING YOUR PERSONAL NARRATIVE ||
**********
- DAY 1 || Grab 7-10 sheets of paper/pages in your journal. On the top of each page, write one of your Life Categories (i.e. Physical, Mental, Social, Spiritual, Financial, Professional, Vocational, Familial, Recreational, etc). With a pencil, go through each of the categories you’ve written out and write the LIES you have believed and are currently letting swirl through your brain on a regular basis. Under EACH lie, leave enough room to write a sentence beneath it.
** For example, in the Professional Category: I am not qualified to do what I do; I won’t actually be successful because too many others are doing it better than I.
- DAY 2 || Go back through each of these pages of lies and, in the space you left, write down the TRUTH that counteracts each of these lies, IN PEN!! Key here: Write the truths … EVEN IF YOU CAN’T BELIEVE THEM YET. The truths you write may not be truths you fully let yourself believe right now, yet you KNOW them to be true of your best self and long for them to be given life. Be bold!!
** To counter the above Professional lie: I am fully capable, equipped and excited to fulfill the calling God’s given me; I am wildly successful in the role I’ve taken on – to inspire others, to sustain myself and to give generously.
- DAYS 3 & 4 || Over a two day time frame, go back and read each page, the lies and the counteracting truths, over and over. Let them sink in, training your brain to take in the two things (neurolinguistic programming!) so that the next time that lie comes up – your brain automatically knows the truth that follows.
- Finally … ERASE the lies you’ve written, leaving only the truths you’ve penned. THIS is your new self narrative. THIS is your clarity. Commit it to memory and put it to use. Recite it daily. And when you feel those old lies creeping back in, declare it to yourself with every ounce of grit you’ve got!
